Moving to Portugal is an exciting journey, but administrative delays can cause unnecessary stress. For many expats, the long wait between securing residency approval and actually receiving the physical residence card is a major frustration.

To help ease this burden, the Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum (AIMA) has launched a new initiative. If you are stuck waiting for your documents to arrive in the post, you can now access a digital “proof of approval”.

Here is a quick summary of what this new document means for you and what steps you need to take next.

What is the AIMA proof of approval?

The proof of approval is a formal, digital declaration issued directly by AIMA. It serves as official confirmation that your request to grant or renew a residence permit has been successful.

While it does not speed up the postal delivery of your physical card, it provides an essential layer of security. It gives you immediate, verifiable proof of your legal administrative status in Portugal while you wait for the final outcome.

How to obtain your digital document

AIMA has deliberately made this process entirely digital to save you time and hassle. You do not need to book an appointment or visit a physical service centre.

To get your document, simply follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official AIMA services portal online;
  2. Log into your personal user area with your credentials;
  3. Locate and download your proof of approval directly to your device.

The agency strictly advises against travelling to AIMA branches for this document, as it is only issued online.

Important limitations to keep in mind

While this digital declaration is a fantastic tool for expats, you must understand its legal limits. AIMA states clearly that this document does not replace your physical residence permit in situations where the actual card is legally required.

Instead, it validates your legal status under the Administrative Procedure Code. To protect against fraud, the document includes a secure QR code. Anyone who needs to verify your status can simply scan the code to instantly confirm the document’s authenticity.
