The Schengen Agreement
The Schengen Agreement is a landmark agreement that regulates the free movement of citizens within the Schengen Area. The area encompasses 26 countries, including Portugal, and it allows people to move freely between these countries without the need for visas. The UK is not part of the Schengen Area, but people from other countries who wish to visit the UK can do so with a visa. Depending on which type of Portuguese visa you have, you can stay in the UK for varying lengths of time.
How much of the year can I spend in the UK on the D2 visa?
Firstly those with a D2 visa are allowed to stay in the UK for up to six months in a calendar year. This is calculated from January 1st to December 31st. This does not include any trips to or from the UK during this period.
How much of the year can I spend in the UK on the D3 visa?
The D3 visa allows a holder to stay in the UK for up to three months in a calendar year. This time is also calculated from January 1st to December 31st. It does not include any trips to or from the UK during this period.
How much of the year can I spend in the UK on the D7 visa?
The D7 visa permits a holder to stay in the UK for up to one month in a calendar year. As with the other visas, this time is calculated from January 1st to December 31st. That does not include any trips to or from the UK during this period.
The types of Portuguese visas
There are different types of Portuguese visas. It’s important to know the options before you decide which visa to pick.
The D2 visa is for those planning to move to Portugal to open a business. On the D2 visa you must stay in Portugal for more than 90 days. It allows its holders to stay for up to one year. The D3 visa is for those who are moving to Portugal as a high skilled employee. If you are on the D3 visa you must stay in Portugal for more than 90 days. And it allows its holders to stay for up to three months. If you are moving on a D3 visa then you could spend up to 183 days in the UK. The D7 visa is specifically designed for those who have passive income and want to move to Portugal. It allows its holders to stay for up to two years. How long you can stay in the UK with a Portuguese visa
The amount of time you can spend in the UK with a Portuguese visa depends on the type of visa. The Schengen Agreement states that those with a D2 visa, are allowed to spend up to 180 days in the UK. This is in any 12-month period. Those with a D3 visa, which is a long-term stay visa, can spend up to 90 days in the UK in any 12-month period. Finally, those with a D7 visa, which is a passive income visa, are allowed to stay in the UK for up to 6 months. This is in any 12-month period.
If you are in the UK with a Portuguese visa and you exceed your stay period, there are some things you should know. You might be at risk of being refused entry or being removed from the UK. Depending on the type of visa you have, there are different maximum durations that you can stay in the UK.

For the D2 visa, you are allowed to stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. On the D3 visa, you can stay for up to 30 days in any 180-day period. And with the D7 visa, you can stay for up to 15 days in any 180-day period.
